How To Increase Your Life Span?
We are often too caught up in the Rat Race and neglect our body. I wonder if that is the reason why the average life span of a person nowadays is just 75 years. It is amazing to hear stories about how our great great grandparents can live up to 90 years old and still look healthy! I, personally think that it all lies in the different lifestyle that we lead. However, do not despair. It is never too early, or too late to start changing your lifestyle for the better.
To stay young at heart and feel like it:
1) Eat in moderation
The three deadly causes for premature death are diabetes, stroke and heart diseases.
All these can be prevented by lowering the saturated fat and cholesterol intake.
You can opt to eat several small meals during the day instead of three large ones to or eat from a smaller plate so that it appears fuller.
Eat slowly, chew properly and give your stomach time to signal your brain that you are full.
2) Eat more fruits and vegetables.
A diet rich in produce halves your risk of developing certain cancers.
But that doesn’t mean you’re restricted to broccoli and apples. Every week, try to buy at least one fruit or vegetable that you’ve never tried before and integrate it into your regular meals.
3) Consume less fat.
Limit your total fat intake to 30% of the calories you get each day. Limit saturated fat — from animal products, such as butter, eggs, meat and regular milk to 10%.
4) Quit smoking and drink only moderately.
If you want to live a long life, you should not smoke at all, avoid smoky places where you can inhale second hand smoke and be a social drinker only.
5) Take a daily supplement.
You cannot possibly get all the required nutrients in your meals no matter how healthy you eat. Thus, it is important to take a multivitamin or calcium tablets.
6) Take a daily aspirin tablet.
One children’s aspirin (81 mg) per day reduces your risk for heart attack and stroke.
7) Bask in the sun.
Sunlight has vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for strong bones and to regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Avoid the sun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and wear sunscreen.
8) Exercise regularly.
Exercising helps to control your weight, tone and strengthen your body. It also helps to build strong bones that can be useful as you get older.
If you have no time to exercise, just walk it out. Take the stairs instead of lifts, park your car in the furthest slot that you can find or alight at the bus stop before yours and walk home.
9) Improve your balance.
Better yet, learn how to catch a ball while standing on one foot. It improves your balance, which reduces your risk of falling.
10) Get your beauty sleep.
Your growth hormones, natures own fountain of youth is produced during sleep. So, sleep as much as you can while you are still young as you make less of it as you grow older.
11) Stop and smell the flowers.
In today’s fast paced society, we tend to over simulate our body and mind which wreaks havoc on our immune system. This can lead to age-related diseases such as cancer and hypertension. Try to relax every now and then and take up yoga or meditation.
12) Stay connected.
People who live with someone else live longer. It may be because there’s someone there to care for you if you get sick, to pick up prescriptions and call a doctor. But it also may be that the emotional connection strengthens your own resolution to survive.
13) Love and be loved.
While there is no evidence that having another half helps you live longer, there’s also no evidence that it doesn’t. Having someone to love and being loved back definitely helps with the goal of staying connected.
14) Find a purpose.
People who have goals for which they actively strive live longer and enjoy a better quality of life.
15) Exercise your brain.
Yes, as we grow older, we will need to keep our brains working. Doing crossword puzzles, computer games, or even returning to school are good ideas to work our brain out. It prevents us, or at least slow down the progress of being senile.
