In the ever increasingly busy life, one tends to neglect many important essential habits. One of the most common one is keeping a healthy lifestyle. Starting from schooling adolescents to working adults, majority of us have bad living habits for example, always having meals very late, consuming too much food that contains high cholesterol or food that are either too sweet or too salty. We know that some of these bad habits are harmful somehow, but we do not take the harms seriously until a severe sickness catches up with us. It is therefore important to try to maintain a healthy everyday living habit to prevent ourselves from any sickness and to keep our body fit at all times. No point to have lots of money but no good health to enjoy.

Here are a few simple steps one can follow to ensure a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

1. Exercise Regularly

Exercising regularly keeps the body weight in check, builds strength and stamina for everyday work. You will find that if you exercise constantly everyday, even after a tiring eight hours of working; one will still feel alert and fresh. Exercising increases one’s ability to concentrate and absorb knowledge resulting in one working more efficiently, increasing one’s performance. Eventually you will feel good about yourself and your self esteem escalates. Exercising is also a great stress-buster! Moreover, it helps prevent heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and many other serious diseases.

To encourage yourself to exercise constantly and to make exercising fun, you may exercise together with friends or family or perhaps join an exercise group or club. You can also try planning active weekends with your family like going for a nature walk or go cycling by the beach. Another method is to adopt a sport you enjoy and be good in it through regular training weekly.

2. Eat Healthily

Eating is a pastime especially in Asian countries. We love to eat! It is therefore extremely important that you watch what you consume daily. Not to the extent of calculating the amount of calories or fats you consume, but try to ensure that whatever you eat, they are not too unhealthy – too oily, too sweet etc. Why you may ask? A healthy diet has countless benefits for one’s body. It reduces the risk of chronic diseases like coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and certain forms of cancers. It helps your body function optimally, as it allows you to get the essential and enough nutrients each day.

One can eat healthily by consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables and select food with less fat. Also, try including whole grain and other high-fibre food such as oats

and bran. When cooking, use healthier methods like steaming, grilling or baking instead of deep-frying. Choose foods and beverages with less sugar and reduce the intake of processed and preserved foods. If you are a drinker, keep your alcohol intake to a minimum. An apple a day keeps the doctor away!

3. Manage your stress

We experience stress in one way or another in our daily lives, a little stress is good to drive one to perform better in whatever they do. However if the stress is prolonged and continuous, it may lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, indigestion, increased coughs and colds and depression. It is therefore crucial to ensure one is not too stressed to prevent one from falling ill.

Try following these stress-busting tips to avoid stress-related problem. First, plan your time and everyday schedule well; do leave room to be flexible and spontaneous. Next, be realistic about what you can do, always set challenging but achievable goals to make sure you do not get too discouraged if you cannot attain your goals. Always put your family and friends as priority — they will support you in times of need. Always try to share your problems with someone close; do not keep them to yourself, it helps release your stress.

Make sure you set aside some personal time for yourself regularly to do activities that you like and can help you relax. Lastly, learn relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga, it helps.
